Iggy Pop for PUNKS

I’ve written about meeting Iggy Pop in his hotel

room in Hollywood at the Holiday Inn, but I didn’t

share the feeling I got throughout my entire body

when he flashed me his million-dollar smile. A smile

that sent shivers down my spine. A smile only Iggy

Pop could produce. A smile that could offer that same

reaction now, even after all these years!

When we knocked on his door, we did so

intending to sleep with him. All. Three. Of. Us. Well,

maybe sleeping with him? We didn’t plan that far

ahead, but when we found out where he was staying,

we figured things would happen naturally. We didn’t

even consider what a bad idea that was. That’s the

thing about being young and not thinking about any

consequences. In our minds, we believed life worked

like in a fairytale. We’d find our prince, and we’d live

happily ever after. If not, just for the night.

We were actually surprised when he opened the

door to us, and I guess you can say that caught us off

guard. Wasn’t he concerned that we could be

dangerous? But no. He was Iggy Pop. Already

legionary at this point and known for living on the

wild side.

It doesn’t sound good, having three girls in your

hotel room after hours where anything could have

taken place, but he was the ultimate gent. Yeah, in my

eyes, he was. He could have taken advantage of our

naivety, but that was not him. It felt like he needed

some personal interaction, looking for human contact.

His touring schedule was brutal at the time, and

perhaps he just needed a friend (or three). He might

have been bored, lonely, or on drugs, but he didn’t

come across as high, and he didn’t appear desperate.

He was kind and gentle and gave us all some of

his time. And in all honesty, I don’t think we needed

to stay any longer than we did. Each of us shared

something personal with him, and that was enough.

While two of us girls waited on the king-sized

bed, there were no sounds, only whispers that I

couldn’t make out, and the ticking of the bedside

clock mixed with the hum of the Holiday Inn sign

through the window. The light cast soft green

shadows over the small room.

When it was my turn to be alone with him in the

bathroom, the door closed behind us, and all I saw38

were his wide, crystal-clear blue eyes looking into

mine. Mesmerizing. He talked to me calmly,

soothingly, as if we had already known each other. I

don’t recall everything we discussed, but I know he

gave me instructions, patiently directing my tongue

into his. And from there, we found a rhythm.

My life might not have changed that night, but it

was a moment between a guy and a girl; for me, it

was magic.
