Errol Flynn’s Estate by Deborah Hernandez-Runions

It was a boring night at Oki Dogs. There were no shows that evening so a bunch of us decided to go up to Errol Flynn’s Estate, now Runyon Canyon for the hipsters. The gate was always locked, but the bars were bent enough for us to squeeze through. If I had to do it today, it wouldn’t happen as I am twice the woman I used to be.
My boyfriend and I dropped some acid and took the stroll up Vista to those gates and slithered through the bars. The street leading to the estate was very dark and only lit by the moonlight. As we wandered up the winding road, I noticed quite a few foundations and thresholds that used to be buildings of some sort. It was pretty spooky.
When we reached the top, there must have been one hundred punks drinking and enjoying the moonlit outdoors, and loitering, of course. As I walked around in my LSD-induced state, I came upon an opening of some sort in the earth. I stood there and looked down into the abyss for what seemed a long time.
Suddenly, someone grabbed my arms from behind and dangled me over the hole. I laughed at the threat that the hermit below would get me. Struggling, I managed to reach solid ground and discovered Henry Rollins harassing me. We wondered why a hermit would live in such a place, and what it was actually used for in its day.
Everyone was enjoying themselves when a police helicopter showed up with lights blazing. The punks scattered like cockroaches. Meanwhile, two police officers had made their way up the drive to where we were. Everyone was instructed to go down the side of the very steep hill.
Even though I explained to the cops that I needed to go back down the driveway because of a bad knee, I was told to follow the others. My boyfriend and I decided to hide in a bush until everyone left the estate. As soon as the coast was clear, we made our way down the drive and squeezed through the gate.
As I was going through the bars, I saw headlights. Before the car was completely stopped, a female officer jumped out of the passenger side. I laughed uncontrollably when I noticed some of the windows were broken, and the doors kicked in. Black Flag flyers were plastered all over the vehicle and there was, I assumed, blood. The only thing going through my mind then was that they would have some explaining to do back at the station, which was why I thought the situation was funny…
