I wore my clothes and my spiky hairstyle like a badge of honor, and so did my friends. As punks, anything goes, and we thrived on creating styles that were all our own, influenced by our idols, Siouxsie Sioux, Deborah Harry, and Billy Idol, to name a few. Maggie, a white girl with the coolest dreadlocks, stood out. So did the daughter of Peter Sellers who wore the best vintage dresses that she ripped off from her famous mom’s fabulous closet. I always envied the way she looked, even when she was falling around drunk in a haze of whiskey and pills as evening turned into daylight.
People might have thought it was about attention, but it was about something much more than that.
