I was in the center of it all. I wanted to experience everything that was out there, and I didn’t want anyone to tell me what I could or couldn’t do. So I ran around with my friends acting as if I was indestructible. “Nothing bad is going to happen to me, Mom,” I would say with agitation in my voice when she questioned where I was going. There was an arrogance to my nonchalant behavior and a stubbornness that could not be tamed.
